AA-CA, in partnership with CIPC (Companies Intellectual Property Commission of South Africa) will launch the AA-CA series of Pan African IP and Anti-Counterfeiting conferences in Cape Town from 22 – 24 February 2022. The event will proceed in hybrid format with FREE registration for online attendees. CIPC will be conducting law-enforcement training in the mornings (invitation only) while the afternoon AA-CA sessions will be open to all interested parties.

For more than two decades, Vanessa has been assisting clients from all industries and areas in respect of both traditional and non-traditional IP protection and enforcement, both in South Africa as well as key African territories, with a strong focus on regional and cross-border enforcement measures. She works closely with government bodies and industries in South Africa and is actively involved in training programs for law enforcement, customs and other role players in anti-counterfeiting and IP enforcement. Vanessa co-authored Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights in Africa (published May 2020 by Oxford University Press), the leading textbook on IP enforcement and anti-counterfeiting in Africa.

																						Ms. Maureen Fondo is the Head Copyright & Related Rights, at the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO). She has a Masters in Intellectual Property (MIP), Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice, Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and currently a PhD candidate. She has contributed to various Copyright Publications and Policy documents at ARIPO that have been adopted by the ARIPO Member States, the recent one being the “Kampala Protocol on Voluntary Registration of Copyright & Related Rights”. She is a resource person for Intellectual Property matters and facilitates in the MIP program at Africa University. Maureen is an artist, she has recorded two gospel albums “Shika Ulichonacho” and “Moyo wa Shukrani” with one song commemorating the WIPO IP Day theme – Get up, Stand Up for Music titled “Sherekea” and another song titled “Celebrate” commemorating ARIPO at forty. Previously, she was the Head of the Legal Service Unit at the Copyright Society of Tanzania. She was the MIP President 5 th Cohort at Africa University and was awarded the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO)-ARIPO Best Graduating Student who has demonstrated Leadership potential in MIP. She was the Vice President at Tumaini University and was awarded the Leadership medal. She collected data for WIPO Report titled “The Economic Contribution of Copyright Based Industries in Tanzania”. Lectured Business Law at the Institute of Accountancy Arusha and was a volunteer Legal Advisor at the Legal and Human Rights Centre in Arusha, Tanzania.

As a former Deputy Head of Patents at a FTSE 100 company in the UK, he has particular experience of both registered and unregistered IP rights in an FMCG environment. He specialises in the filing of applications in the chemical, biochemical and pharmaceutical fields and related litigation. He also has experience in commercial transactions involving IP, including confidentiality, joint development, supply, licencing and technology transfer agreements.
John is a Fellow of the South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Patent Agents (CIPA), a member of the Law Society of England and Wales and of the Institute of Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office.
He was the recipient of the CIPA Gill Prize in 2000 and has been listed in IAM’s World’s Leading Patent Practitioners since 2011.
